F.I.E.R.O. will again stage its annual awards program to
recognize excellence in fire station or related
facilities design and construction. The awards program
is open to design firms and fire departments that have
brought a fire facility on-line during the last five
years or have a project “on-the-boards” that has not yet
been approved for construction. Awards will also be
given for outstanding examples of fire station
renovations or adapted reuse that have been completed or
are in the planning stages. All entries submitted will
be on display throughout the conference.
Design Awards will be
presented in the following four categories:
New
Construction
Career, combination or volunteer fire stations and
special purpose fire facilities that have been placed in
service within the last five years.On-the-Boards
Career, combination or volunteer stations and special
purpose fire or other emergency facilities that have
been designed but have not yet been approved for
construction. (This award category seeks to
encourage the local funding agency to proceed with the
project.)
Renovations
Career, combination or volunteer stations and special
purpose fire or other emergency facilities that have had
a major reconfiguration and/or addition within the last
five years.
Adaptations
Decommissioned fire stations converted to other uses.
Award Levels to be
presented include Honor, Merit, and Recognition
Honor
Award
An Honor Award will go to
those projects in which all five jurors have agreed the
project exemplifies excellence in all aspects of
planning and design include site plan, floor plan(s),
and architectural image.
Merit
Award
A Merit Award will go to
those projects in which four out of five jurors have
agreed the project exemplifies an outstanding example in
most all aspects of planning and design including site
plan, floor plan(s), and architectural image.
Recognition Award
A Recognition Award will
go to those projects in which three out of five jurors
have agreed the project demonstrates considerable
achievement in planning and design include site plan,
floor plan(s), and architectural image.
Jury
The jury
once again will be composed of members whose careers
have given them experience with the building type in
both the fire service and design office side of the
issues.
Meet the jurors
Submission Format 1
A maximum of two 30x40 photo
quality prints per project submitted shall be mounted on
¼” thick foam core boards. Board(s) shall have a
vertical orientation. The
content and design composition of the board(s) is left
to the discretion of the submitter, but be reminded that
they are being reviewed by designers.
The name
of the project, the name fire department and the design firm(s) involved shall appear as a part of the
composition of the board(s) face.
Submission Format 2
One CD to contain the 30 x40 composition(s) above saved as PDF document(s) and A
PowerPoint™ presentation of no more that 20 images of
the project shall also be submitted. PowerPoint™ images
may range from site analysis drawing, to concept
diagrams to design development issues and the images
used in the board composition as well as additional
images of the built or planned project. In short, any
additional information that will help explain the
project solution. Images imported into the PowerPoint™
file shall be PNG/s saved from JPEGS or TIFF images.
(Images in the PowerPoint that require a special program
to open may prevent the project from being shown during
the awards presentation.)
Each PNG
image used in the PowerPoint™ shall also be saved to the
disk as a JEPRG or TIFF file to facilitate possible
publication of the image. When
burning the CD, please select burn option that allows
the CD to function on both Mac and PC platforms.

shall be shipped so as to arrive no later than Friday,
October 24, 2008.

Submission Fee
$250.00 (US) for each
entry payable to F.I.E.R.O. via cashier’s check, USPS
Money Order, or Credit Card through PayPal on the
symposium web page.
Entry
fee is waived for submitters who also register for the 7th
Annual F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Symposium on a one
for one basis. Otherwise, each additional entry will
require an additional entry fee of $200.00 (US).
Submission Returns
No boards or disk will be
returned unless shipping is pre-paid by the entrant and
included with the submission. Boards that are returned
cannot, therefore, be used in a planned exhibition of
selected projects that will be made available to
academic programs and other public galleries or viewing
opportunities.
Submission Display
By entering the awards
program, submitters agree to having the submission
displayed at the 2006 Fire Station Design Symposium and
additional venues.
Publication Release
By entering the awards
program, submitters and their project photographers,
whether in-house or contracted, agree to any future
publication of the images contained in their submission
package in the pages of Fire-Rescue Magazine, the pages
of any publication of the International Association of
Fire Chiefs or to any other entity that my be assigned
by F.I.E.R.O.
Entrants, furthermore agree that any images
submitted may be used by the Fire Industry Equipment
Research Organization, the International Association of
Fire Chiefs, Fire-Rescue Magazine or to any other entity
that my be assigned by F.I.E.R.O. to promote any future
F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Symposium.
