2010 Fire Station
Design Awards Program
In conjunction with the Fire
Station Design Symposium, the Fire Industry Equipment
Research Organization will once again stage its annual
Fire Station Design Awards program to recognize
excellence in fire station or related fire facilities
design and construction. The awards program is open to
design firms and fire departments that have brought a
fire facility on-line during the last five years or have
a project “on-the-boards” that has not yet been approved
for construction by the funding agency. Awards will also
be given for outstanding examples of fire station
renovations or adapted reuse that have been completed or
are in the planning stages. All entries submitted will
be on display throughout the fire station design
symposium.
Design Awards will be
presented in the following four categories:
New Construction
Career, combination or volunteer fire stations and
special purpose fire facilities that have been placed in service within the last
five years.On-the-Boards
Career, combination or volunteer stations and
special purpose fire facilities that have been designed but have not yet been
approved for construction. (This award category seeks to encourage the local
funding agency to proceed with the project.)
Renovations
Career, combination or volunteer stations and
special purpose fire facilities that have had a major reconfiguration and/or
addition within the last five years.Adaptations
Decommissioned fire stations converted to other uses.
Award Levels to be presented include Honor, Merit, and Recognition.
Honor Award
An Honor Award will go to those projects in which all
six jurors have agreed the project exemplifies excellence in all
aspects of planning and design include site plan, floor plan(s), and architectural
image.
Merit Award
A Merit Award will go to those projects where five out
of six jurors have agreed the project exemplifies
excellence in all aspects of planning and design
including site plan, floor
plan(s), architectural image
and relationship to context.Recognition Award
A Recognition Award will go to those projects in which
four out of six jurors have agreed the project
demonstrates considerable achievement in planning and
design including site plan, floor plan(s), and
architectural image.
Jury
The jury once again will be composed of members whose careers have given them
experience with the building type from both the fire
service and design office sides of the issues.
Submission Format
Part 1
A maximum of two 30x40 photo quality prints per project
submitted shall be mounted on ¼” thick foam core boards.
To facilitate display, board layout(s) shall have a
vertical orientation only. No exceptions.
The content and design composition of the board(s) is
left to the discretion of the submitter but must contain
the floor plan(s). Be reminded, however, that trained
designers will review the entry boards! The graphic
design layout of the board(s) is important!
The name of the project, the name of the fire department
and the name design firm(s) and any fire service
consultants involved shall appear as an integral part of
the composition of the board(s) front face.
PDF files for the boards shall be sent to TPM Color Lab
in Charlotte, NC for printing, mounting and delivery to
the jury venue (www.tpm.com).
Cost for TPM’s service is the responsibility of the
entrant and will need to be provided at the time of your

Part 2
One labeled CD containing the 30 x40 composition(s)
from Part 1 saved as PDF
document(s) plus a PowerPoint™ presentation of no more
that 20 additional images of the project. The
PowerPoint™ images may range from context diagrams, to
site analysis drawing, to concept diagrams, to design
development issues, construction progress images, etc;
in short, any additional information that will help
explain the project solution to the jury.
Images imported into the PowerPoint™ file shall be jpg
images. (Images in the PowerPoint that require a special
program to open may prevent the project from being
properly shown during the awards jury.)
Each individual jpg image used in the board composition
and each image used in the PowerPoint™ shall also be
saved to the disk in a folder bearing the project’s
name. The images will be use to facilitate the
production of a F.I.E.R.O. PowerPoint presentation on
the award winners during the symposium at a time TBD.
When burning the CD, please select the burn option that
allows the CD to function on both Mac and PC platforms.

Entry Form Due Date
Entry Form(s) and Fee(s) are due no later than Friday,
October 8th 2010.
Submission Fee
$275.00 (US) for each entry payable to F.I.E.R.O. via
cashier’s check, USPS Money Order, or Credit Card on the symposium web page www.fierofirestation.com. Mail entry form(s) and CD
portion of the presentation requirements to the address
listed below.
Design awards program entry fee is
waived for submitters who also register for the 9th
Annual F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Symposium on a one-for-one basis. Fee for each additional entry is $225.00
(US).
Submissions Due
Files for board(s) and attached CD shall be transmitted
or shipped so as to arrive no later than Friday, October
22, 2010.

Submission Returns
No TPM printed boards will be returned unless requested
in a separate message post-symposium. Return shipping
cost shall be the entrant’s responsibility. Boards that
are returned cannot be used in any post symposium
exhibition. Selected projects will be made available to
academic programs and other public galleries or viewing
opportunities.
Submission Display
By entering the awards program, submitters agree to have
the submission displayed at the 2010 Fire Station Design
Symposium and additional venues.
Publication Release
By entering the awards program, submitters and their
project photographers, whether in-house or contracted,
agree to any future publication of the images contained
in their submission package in the pages of Fire-Rescue
Magazine, the pages of any publication of the
International Association of Fire Chiefs or to any other
entity that my be assigned by F.I.E.R.O.
Entrants, furthermore agree that any images submitted
may be used by the Fire Industry Equipment Research
Organization, the International Association of Fire
Chiefs, FireRescue Magazine or to any other
entity that my be assigned by F.I.E.R.O. to promote any
future F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Symposium.
