Headquarters Station
Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects was selected as part of a
design team to assist the Grand Island Fire Department with the
programming and design of their new headquarters station. The
project offered unique challenges as the site is in close
proximity to a major theme park and receives large amounts of
vehicular traffic on a seasonal basis. The site has separate
drives for responding and returning apparatus, as well as, staff
vehicles. A separate drive and parking lot for the public is
located at the main entry area. An auxiliary building for
additional vehicle storage is located at the rear of the site,
as well as, access for an additional future drive. The local
climate's vast differences in temperature and weather
conditions, as well as, a desire for high efficiency building
systems resulted in for apparatus bays with radiant floor
heating. PlymoVent® exhaust system and
numerous training features are also provided. The station has
eight private sleep rooms, private bathrooms, a large exercise
room with sports flooring, kitchen and dining facilities, a
training/community room, offices, and all necessary
decontamination, turn out gear storage, and SCBA facilities. The
building is equipped with an automatic fire suppression system
and was designed beyond the minimum sustainability requirements
of the building code.
