Fire Station One
Fire Station One for the Guymon Fire Department in Guymon,
Oklahoma is believed to be the first green fire station in the
state of Oklahoma. Currently, the Guymon Fire Department team
consists of 15 paid duty personnel and 25 volunteers serving a
town population of approximately 12,000 residents over 7.31
square miles as well as a portion of Texas County. The
department also has mutual aid agreements with the volunteer
fire departments that cover the rest of Texas County. Along with
fire suppression (structural and wild land), the department also
covers the ambulance service, extrication and rescue, and leads
the way in comprehensive public education programs. The
department's apparatus currently consists of three fire engines,
four ambulances, two rescue trucks, trt trailer, and two brush
trucks, with future plans for a ladder truck. At 24,000 SF,
providing a station that is functional and flexible for now and
for future needs is the primary objective, however there is also
an intense focus on sustainable design solutions. With water
rationings not being uncommon to the area, incorporating green
building strategies into the project provides beneficial
enhancements to the already fragile environment of the Oklahoma
Panhandle. A few of the Sustainable Strategies included in the
project are: Passive heating, Passive Cooling, Natural Day
lighting, Rain water Harvesting, Gray Water Collection,
Xeriscaping, Utilizing local resources and labor force, and
Utilization of Low Impact Materials.
