Fire station design projects often served as the “teaching vehicle” in his design studios. Throughout his concurrent and overlapping academic and fire service careers, Don linked his fire service and academic positions to study fire station site design and fire stations as a unique building typology. In supporting his “research” in fire station design, Don has visited, studied and photographed fire stations throughout North America. In doing so he has been welcomed by the brothers for “tours of duty” in many of them. This has allowed him to hear and experience first-hand “post-occupancy” evaluations by end users.

Don has also always maintained his own active design practice parallel his fire service and teaching responsibilities. Lately this practice has focused on fire station consulting for fire departments and architects doing fire stations.

Don holds degrees in design from North Carolina State University and Harvard University.
